Why Protect  Ear?

Among the senses, the ears are particularly susceptible to the air element or ‘vata dosha.’ The fast-paced modern lifestyle, constant exposure to dry winds, cold, and persistent noise from devices like computers and TVs can disrupt the delicate vata balance. This disturbance impacts not only the ears but the overall data flow in the body. According to Ayurveda, the ears and eyes are connected to the soles of the feet. Applying oil in the ears imparts a cooling effect that can alleviate sensations like burning feet.

Karna Purana: Ayurveda introduces a procedure called Karna Purana (Ear Oiling)– the instillation of medicated oils or clarified butter (ghee) into the ears. This practice offers significant benefits for ear-related ailments, including hearing loss, tinnitus, Meniere’s disease (known for vertigo), swimmer’s ear, and various other ear conditions.

Conditions for which the Karna Purana procedure is used

Ayurveda practitioners generally use Karna Purana therapy for purifying the ear canal and ear structures. However, there are other conditions for which this practice is helpful which include:

  • Earache
  • Earwax blockage
  • Wax removal or excess wax
  • Ear congestion
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Meniere’s disease (feeling like the world is spinning)
  • Hearing loss
  • Swimmer’s ear (painful infection of the outer ear)
  • Headache
  • Migraine
  • Neck pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Pain disorders
  • Vertigo (sensation of whirling and loss of balance)
  • General body aches
  • Vata diseases (Neurological disorders)
  • Depression
  • Body balance disorders

Performing Karna Purana

Karna Purana is especially recommended during the Vata season and therefore it is usually performed during autumn, winter, and early spring. However, it is effective for all seasons in calming the nervous system and the overactive mind.

  • A 15-30 minute head massage of the patient should be done before the procedure (Brahmi oil can be used for massage).
  • Ask the patient to lie down in the lateral position.
  • Pour a few drops of medicated warm oil into the affected ear and let the patient stay in the lateral position for 15-20 mins.
  • Ask the patient to rest for half an hour after this procedure.

The procedure should be followed continuously for a week for better and desirable results. If the patient has not got the desired results, then repeat the procedure after a month.

Benefits of Karna Purana Therapy (Oil for ear)

During the Karna Purana therapy, 2-15 drops of medicated oils are instilled in the ears. These oils have strengthening properties for ear structures. They nourish all parts of the ears including the external ear, middle ear, inner ear, and eardrum. The Karna Purana therapy has many benefits, such as:

  • It is very helpful for balance disorders; balance disorders are characterized by vertigo, dizziness, and loss of balance.
  • It is good for frequent earaches; the ayurvedic oils used in this therapy are beneficial for reducing inflammation and pain in the ears.
