Ayurvedic Oil for Ear: Nurturing Senses with Traditional Techniques
Reviewed By: Dr. Geetha Kamath, BAMS
In the pursuit of longevity, Ayurveda emphasizes safeguarding our sense organs. Simple routines can work wonders like oil for ear in preventing and alleviating common issues like tinnitus and earaches. By giving due attention to our senses, we ensure they maintain their vitality as we age.

Among the senses, the ears are particularly susceptible to the air element or ‘vata dosha.’ The fast-paced modern lifestyle, constant exposure to dry winds, cold, and persistent noise from devices like computers and TVs can disrupt the delicate vata balance. This disturbance impacts not only the ears but the overall data flow in the body. According to Ayurveda, the ears and eyes are connected to the soles of the feet. Applying oil in the ears imparts a cooling effect that can alleviate sensations like burning feet.
Karna Purana: Ayurveda introduces a procedure called Karna Purana (Ear Oiling)– the instillation of medicated oils or clarified butter (ghee) into the ears. This practice offers significant benefits for ear-related ailments, including hearing loss, tinnitus, Meniere’s disease (known for vertigo), swimmer’s ear, and various other ear conditions.

Ayurveda practitioners generally use Karna Purana therapy for purifying the ear canal and ear structures. However, there are other conditions for which this practice is helpful which include:
